Well school is over for me now and out of sheer boredom I decided to put up a post on here. And since it seems most of what goes on here is debating issues, I decided to do something a little different. I'm going to post 3 things I like about republicans and 3 things I like about democrats.
Republicans first.
#1 Republicans remind me of my dad who scolds me after I spend my money on something stupid, telling me I need to spend less money than I earn. Usually I think it's annoying, but overall very, very smart. This is how I view republicans. Scolding the democrats for spending too much money on something stupid, like a 1.3 million dollar projector for a planeterium in Chicago. If there was no one to try to stop the democrats from spending like Paris Hilton in Hollywood, we'd be in even more serious trouble than we are now.
#2 I really like the republicans commitment to veterans and troops. These guys probably don't get enough praise and support. I've taken care of a lot of WWII veterans in my work (hospice), and I really admire these guys. Even the soldiers of today fighting in the middle east, I don't think I could do it, and I'm grateful there are people who will. I feel like republicans do a better job at showing support for the military and for veterans than democrats do.
#3 My favorite thing about republicans has to be their love of guns. As a huge hunter and outdoors lover I definitely fit in a million times better with NRA card carrying republicans than PETA card carrying democrats haha. With republicans in charge I know my hunting activites will always be legal and they'll always let me have my guns.
Now the Democrats
#1. My favorite thing about democrats is their tolerance and usual open-mindedness to other lifestyles. All the real democrats I have known have been very caring, open-minded, tolerant people who would never make anyone feel bad about the way they choose to live their life. They believe the way other people choose to lead their life is their business and their business alone. And that's the way I feel. I really like that open-minded attitude.
#2. Another thing I like about the democrats is their determination to help out the little guy. The poor single mom, or the poor student, or the working class family trying to make ends meet. I know the way they help them (usually by taxing the rich) is a controversial issue, but I still feel like they want to help these people out by food stamps, pell grants, medicaid, utilities assistance, etc.
#3. The last thing I want to mention about the democrats is their action on global warming. I am a huge believer that global warming is caused by us emitting greenhouse gases like CO2, N20, and CH4. I personally think we need to limit our greenhouse emissions. A few years ago the world took action by eliminating the use of CFC's (chlorofluoro hydrocarbons found in aerosol cans and refrigerators) and by so doing we stopped the progression of the ozone hole over Antartica. Now it's time for that same type of issue when it comes to global warming, and I feel like democrats are a little stronger overall on this issue than the republicans.
It is because of these reasons I'll probably stop claiming to be one party or the other. I really have things I like about both, but I probably fall somewhere in the middle leaning left a slight majority of the time. I'd invite whoever wants to to maybe offer what you like or admire about one, both or other parties. I just get bored reading the news all day and want to hear what the people on this blog think about it.

Dude, this is the feel-good blog post I desperately needed today! "Politics as usual" has been depressing the heck out of me lately. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this.
Thanks for the uplifting post Creight. I think it's awfully egotistical of us to think we have a noticeable impact on our climate, but I appreciate you acknowledging things you like about both sides. I agree that one should not look at parties, but instead policy. For myself, I am in agreement with the Constitution and the liberties it represent. On a side note: I would add these to the book list if I knew how, but my most recent reads are The 5000 Year Leap by Cleon Skousen, and Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. The first helped me to more fully understand what would happen if God is taken out of our political system, and I'm sure you're familiar with the second.
I like this post as well. Both parties have admirable qualities. I know I am painting with a broad brush and that neither of the below attributes are exclusive to one party but as a general statement they are probably more accurate than not:
While I may disagree with certain means used by the democrats to care for the poor I am glad that they do care for the poor. Who among us has not benefitted in some way from these programs? Where would we be without many of them?
As for republicans I really like how they hold to traditional values though here as well I may disagree with certain means whereby they enforce these values. I like that they feel a sense of right and wrong and that injury will come to society as a result of forsaking those values.
Done with finals! What a good feeling!!
I hesitate to make comments about the parties because I know that not everybody fits nice and neatly into the stereotypical R or D mentality usually afforded to them. So with that said, here are just generalized comments off the top of my head.
Ditto to what Matt said about the dems - their charitable impulses are to be admired, even though their means are often suspect.
I give the republicans higher marks when it comes to strong national defense and a (relatively) higher sense of fiscal sanity and discipline.
And welcome Rich Jones! Send me an email (Creighton has the address) and I'll give you admin status so you can add to the book list. It used to be more robust than it is now, but my pops decided to take his down. After climategate (which I plan to post about sometime soon), I'm even more hesitant to drink Mr. Gore's cool-aid about global warming.
Good post Creighton!
The thing I like most about Democrats is that they keep the Republicans in check.
The thing I like most about Republicans is that they keep the Democrats in check.
I'm not the party animal I used to be (attended the RN Convention in Houston, 1988, and served as a R state delegate here in Utah, precinct chair, etc.)
Great point Chris. I just read an article on the health bill in the Senate and I love the battle. The parties check each other and prevent the concentration of power. As frustrating as this process can be at times it is a powerful protection from majority tyranny. In addition, the many flavors within each party constitute another check as now witnessed with Senator Nelson, the Democrat holdout from Nebraska on the health bill.
Devin...Al Gore is the worst source fr information on climate change. While he does bring publicity to the issue, his sources and citations are laughable. For fun, go to his website and click on the link that talks about the science of global warming. In the scientific community he would be ridiculed and laughed at. That aspect of his work is an embarassment to scientists everywhere. So I'm asking everyone please don't write off the greater climate change issue because Al Gore makes exaggerated claims based on absent science (which he did if I'm not mistaken.) but still feel free to post on it because I will most likely agree with most things you may say.
Just by way of introduction rich is one of my buddies from high school. We both share the common bond of trying to get into med school (successfully I hope.)

Okay here is the link to view his sources if you are bored. Make sure to click on footnotes at the bottom. I love one of his sources that just says "nature." He also cites the Washington post as a credible scientific source. Bad bad bad!
